Changes for 918 Area Code in Oklahoma

Changes for 918 Area Code in Oklahoma

Oklahoma adds new 539 area code in 918 region.

If you're part of the 918 area code in Oklahoma, the Oklahoma Corporation Commission has recently passed a plan that will mean some changes in how you use your phone service.  Soon, a new 539 area code will be available for new phone customers and all customers will need to dial 10 digits (including area code) for local calls instead of the current 7-digit dialing method.

Over the last few years, an increase in the use of technology, including home and office phone systems, cell phones, pagers, and phone lines used for fax machines, modems, burglar alarms, ATM machines, and internet access has decreased the number of 918 phone numbers available.  The North American Number Plan Administration predicts that by the end of 2012, there will be no 918 numbers left.  Because of this, some area phone numbers will have a 918 area code while most new numbers will begin with 539.

A transition plan is in place to help customers with the changes.  Beginning in August of 2010, customers can use either 7-digit or 10-digit dialing to place local calls within the 918 area code.  Starting in March of 2011, customers must begin dialing all 10-digits of a phone number, beginning with the area code, even for local calls.  In April of next year, phone numbers with the new 539 area code will be available, but customers will still have the option to receive a 918 number if they choose.  By the end of 2012, it is estimated that all new numbers in the area will receive the 539 area code.

The change in area code does not change whether a call is local or long distance.  Customers will not be charged long distance charges for local calls.  If you need more information about this change, see the 918/539 Schedule and FAQs published by the Oklahoma Corporation Commission.
