How to test and repair your phone lines
By performing a few simple checks yourself, you may be able to save a $75 service call charge. Please follow the steps below to try correcting the problem with your phone before you submit your repair request.

Test #1 – Check Your Indoor Equipment and Jacks
What You’ll Need:
You will need a phone with a cord (not cordless) to complete this test.
Steps:
- Unplug all devices in your home or office that are connected to a phone jack, including:
- Phones
- Computer modems
- Fax machines
- Answering machines
- Satellite/cable receivers
- Alarm systems
- After all devices have been unplugged for 15-30 seconds, plug a corded phone into one of the phone jacks. Pick up the handset and listen for the dial tone. Repeat the process at each phone jack in your home or office.
If you hear a dial tone at all the jacks, your service has either restored itself, or you may have a problem with one of the devices listed above. If you don't hear a dial tone at all the jacks, continue to Test 2.
Test #2 – Check Your Phone Box
What You’ll Need:
You will need a phone with a cord (not cordless) and a flat head screwdriver to complete this test.
Steps:
First, find the “phone box” that connects your inside wiring to the phone company’s network. The phone box is usually a grey or green box with a telephone company symbol and/or the words “Network Interface” somewhere on the box. If the phone box is outside, it is usually located near an electric meter. Inside, it may be in a basement or garage. Use the screwdriver to loosen the screws, and open the box.
Unplug the phone lines inside the box from the jacks, and plug in the corded phone. Pick up the handset and listen for the dial tone. Repeat the process for each phone jack in the box.
If you still hear a problem, the issue is most likely with the outside line. Call Sage at 1-888-449-4940 to schedule a repair technician.
